Behavioural, Emotional and Social Difficulties (BESD)
These are one of eleven types of special educational need (SEN) that the Department for Children’s Services and Families (DCSF) collects data on via the Pupil Level Annual Schools Census (PLASC) return that schools submit on an annual basis.
Children and young people with behavioural, emotional and social difficulties (BESD) cover the full range of ability and a continuum of severity. Their behaviours present a barrier to learning. They may be withdrawn or isolated, disruptive and disturbing, hyperactive and lack concentration, have immature social skills or present challenging behaviours (Buckinghamshire County Council)
