Aiming High for Disabled Children: better support for families (2007)
http://www.hm-treasury.gov.uk/
This report marks the culmination of the Disabled Children Review. It identifies three priority areas to
improve outcomes for disabled children and young people:
- Access and empowerment
- Responsive services and timely support
- Improving quality and capacity
Engagement of disabled children and young people in shaping services at a local level results in the provision of
more appropriate services, and can help services work more efficiently and effectively, allowing for more
flexible and tailored provision.
It also recognises the need to develop a clearer picture of the disabled children population at a local level,
so that disabled children’s needs are planned for. Local Authorities and PCTs will improve their data collection
for this group and national and local agencies will work together to develop more coordinated data sets.
It acknowledges that disabled children in transition to adulthood face particular challenges, and the government
has provided £19 million for a transition support programme to help disabled young people and their families
benefit from intensive, coordinated support and person centred planning.
